Getting to know your consumer unit

You might know it as a fuse box and it’s the place where the electricity for your entire home is controlled.

Light bulbs

After you have been in your new home for a while, you may find that a number of bulbs fail around the same time. This is because they were all fitted at similar times so will be reaching the end of their service life together.

Extractor fans

As well as reducing condensation and removing steam from your kitchen, cloakroom and bathroom, the extractor fans installed in your home are designed to remove fumes and unwanted odours from the air to improve the air quality.

MVHR system

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), otherwise called heat recovery ventilation, is a form of ventilation. This ventilation system provides the required amount of fresh air into each room, as well as extracting stale and polluted air where needed.

Smoke alarms and heat detectors

Smoke and heat detectors may have been fitted in your home.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Your new home may be fitted with a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. Some of these alarms have a lifespan of up to seven years, after which the unit will need changing because the batteries cannot be replaced. Please check your carbon monoxide user guide for details of this.
